Here we have created a light well which separates the drive court from the house itself and allows for an entrance across a water feature that cascades over glass to the atrium below.
A combination of bold and discreet lighting was used to create a wow factor and the layering of lighting set various moods. Subtle lighting has been incorporated in all recesses and feature bulkheads to give a warm glow to peripheral edges. Concealed lighting has also been used to highlight and accentuate the organic natural finishes. In the dining room a customized crystal chandelier suspended from the ceiling rafters. Other feature lighting includes a custom designed ring light by AA Interiors, over the informal braai room and a signature Willow Lamp in the main bedroom.
Located in the Trousdale neighborhood of Beverly Hills where all proposed work must take place without disturbing existing slopes, the challenge for this design is to find ways to create light for the lower level.
On arrival one is lead up delicate cantilevering concrete stairs alongside an immense off-shutter concrete wall which tapers dramatically towards its base – and thence into a triple volume Entrance Foyer. Here visitors are welcomed by a sculpture set into a water-feature and, through full height glazing, glimpses of mountain beyond. Monolithic stairs are suspended above and filter shafts of refracted morning light creating a sense of calm. The Study, Gym, Massage Room and luxurious Guest Bedrooms are all situated at the Ground Floor behind vegetation, screens and double glazing considerately layered to provide privacy and peace.
