This modern house located in a hillside of Los Angeles, California, in the USA, was built by Fran Silvestre. It was constructed on various different levels in order to adapt to the changes of the terrain on which it was built. This marvelous house with white walls made of plaster and gray stone possess an excellent panoramic view of both the city and the nearby sea, which we can enjoy through the house’s large glass walls.
Songdo Beach was the first Public Beach of the nation. It had time receiving spotlight as luxury vacation spot and honeymoon destination before and after Korean Liberation. In the storm of developing in 1960s~70s, bad quality’s commercial facilities like raw fish house had occupied the beach and people had hesitated to visit the beach. After experiencing the damaging effects of these indiscriminate development, a variety of restrictions and the efforts of citizen community has made water clean and transformed the beach into a favorite place for family vacationer.
On the other side of the gallery, we have the working area. Consisting of white modern desks with chairs of the same style in black and white, it also has modern lamps hanging from the ceiling, providing perfect illumination.
Swiss building regulations are notoriously tight and building on this block was particularly challenging. Camenzind explains: ‘There are strict rules around boundary distance and building volume, which means it’s quite difficult to be creative with buildings in Switzerland. But we were determined to build something that responded to the site rather than just a square box planted on the plot.
The main concept of the main structure is the reference to the plot’s location, which is on the highest hill of the neighborhood. The scenery includes uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean and the entire Gush Dan area. Therefore, the house was designed so that it opens to the view. As a consequence, the external sitting area was designed as a direct continuation of the internal space, and beyond that, the swimming pool with the structure’s contour lines.
