Here’s the catch: just because it isn’t a seemingly vital piece of your kitchen doesn’t mean it’s an easy swap. In fact, undoing the customization and permanence of a kitchen backsplash can feel overwhelming and daunting. Add a few mental images of chipping away at stubborn backsplash tiles and you may have one the messiest kitchens you can imagine.
Next, it’s time to throw out those cans of hearts of palm you never use and decide what else stays or goes. Once you’ve got a good idea of how much you’re working with, it’s time to find a home for everything that’s left store what isn’t attractive in your cabinets. A small kitchen island can add extra counter space as well as storage — and even a breakfast bar. Small, round or square islands work better in smaller square spaces. You can roll it into a kitchen as needed and then put it back behind your sofa when done.

If you’re looking to open up the space of your kitchen and don’t have and room to grow outwards, consider removing the upper cabinets. This frees up the wall, allowing for modern open shelving with a few decorative items and dishware.
