Each prismatic space is defined by a monochrome range of colours and an exclusive combination of materials. A lengthwise promenade through the different spaces starts in the darker tones and gradually goes to brighter tones. Fine wood, natural stone and mosaics of wood, stone or metal are the material elements that are combined in different proportions to define each space.
A big challenge was to make it all cozy and not sterile looking, so I used a lot of natural elements and finishes (wood, wool, woven natural fibers), as well as a few select family pieces.Overall I think we did achieve our goal. The house feels really clean and minimal, but still warm even during Chicago winters. My favorite part of our home is definitely the wood burning fireplace. When it’s cold out, we love to light a fire and sit in the living room reading, or drinking wine and playing Cards Against Humanity with our friends
This five-floor residence is constructed within the fixed footprint of an existing three-story townhouse on a typically narrow infill Manhattan plot, sharing party walls with the adjacent houses. The clients asked for loft-like spaces, open and filled with light but also private – exactly the opposite of a standard NYC row house, with its street-side windows usually curtained or shuttered from the eyes of passers-by.
