The clients’ brief was to ensure that when they occupied the house on their own that it was not too big and empty, however at the same time it also had to allow for the whole family and grandchildren should they decide to stay over. The decision was made to keep all the entertainment spaces as well as the master bedroom on the ground floor, with three additional guest suites on the first level. regulations only permitted a single story, the guests’ suites were accommodated in the roof attics.
Venture outside to the incredible infinity-edged pool featuring a 12 person spa, fireplace, and entertainment area. The partially-submerged chaise lounges, reminiscent of a Greek island getaway, face the Pacific ocean in the distance as the basin of Los Angeles unfolds like a blanket. This beautiful residence is located on the peak of a hill in California, meaning that its key attractions include the gorgeous views that we can enjoy through the house’s numerous glass walls. At a size of 2,750 square feet, it was Design Studio in 2014 for a retired couple, seeking to settle down somewhere where they could take in the natural environment.
Within this lush almost ambrosial setting, the predominantly hard and monolithic landscape design creates a deliberate experiential counterpoint. The building facade also becomes part of this setting, especially at the ground-plane level where, every so often, large vertically furrowed stone-clad panel walls frame the open space expanse.
