At entrance, you will see a mirror cube on the right, this is a constrained decoy – on the client’s request a part of the room was allocated for a spacious full-scale walk-in closet. For this voluminous element not to conceal space, it was decorated with mirrors, which allows to visually retain the room dimensions, add light from the reflected window, and is pragmatic: a mirror is a must-be in a room with a walk-in closet.
A sequence of boxes of different sizes that are attached and moved across. The boxes open to one side and close to the opposite side in order to show or hide their content. These different boxes slide on each other while being however internally connected. The different uses inside are visually independent but there is still a continuity between them. The lower boxes host the more private uses of the dwelling, such as the bedroom, the dressing room and the bathroom, while the higher ones host the more public uses, such as the living room, the dining room and the kitchen
To meet this challenge, the conventional plan and section has been radically redefined. The stair and elevator core are pushed up against the street façade, instead of running along one of the party walls. As a result, loft-like spaces run fluidly the entire length of the 38-foot-deep building, rather than being compartmentalized into small front and back rooms
This impression wanes at dusk, as the glow from the horizontal slit windows and the vertical glass slots animates the street facade, making the aluminum appear more as a screen than a mass, and invites the eye toward, but not into, the house.
Gut rennovation and 2 story addition on 1890’s row house in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. The design of this townhouse sets out to utilize natural, reclaimed, and common materials in a contemporary fashion. Renovation completed on an extremely tight budget with a very hands on approach to testing fabrication methods while the house was under construction. Completed in May 2014
