At entrance, you will see a mirror cube on the right, this is a constrained decoy – on the client’s request a part of the room was allocated for a spacious full-scale walk-in closet. For this voluminous element not to conceal space, it was decorated with mirrors, which allows to visually retain the room dimensions, add light from the reflected window, and is pragmatic: a mirror is a must-be in a room with a walk-in closet.
The design of the loft explores the modernist use of plane/volume and opaque/transparent, with the interplay of different materials. The strategy adopted, is that of a contemporary architectural intervention within an pre-existing envelope.
Internal finishes include a fully imported German kitchen, large format granite floor and wall slabs which are used throughout, frameless glazed balustrades and floor-to-ceiling glazing, as well as various aluminium louvre devices
The solid cherry wall and two story high bookcase and the delicate staircase enclosing these private functions, are punctured by high windows and pre-existing skylights, allowing light to penetrate while preserving a sense of serene calmness.
Gut rennovation and 2 story addition on 1890’s row house in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. The design of this townhouse sets out to utilize natural, reclaimed, and common materials in a contemporary fashion. Renovation completed on an extremely tight budget with a very hands on approach to testing fabrication methods while the house was under construction. Completed in May 2014
